Term 2, Week 9

Good morning everyone,

Welcome to week 9.

Cross Country

This year’s Cross Country will be held on Thursday 27^th June (weather dependent). Children are to wear their faction coloured T-shirts and bring along coloured decorations (teddies, banners etc).

We will begin at 9.15am and will conclude around recess.

We will begin with the Year 1 classes and finish with the Year 6’s.

Please be aware the bottom car park (Cape Naturaliste Road) will be closed for the event.

Friendology:

As you may know, OLC is very excited to host Dana Kerford - founder of URStrong and the Friendology program.This event will take place on Wednesday 26th June, 5:30pm - 7:00pm.

Dana is a world - recognised speaker and her engaging, practical and dynamic sessions inform both children and parents on the complexities of friendships as well as how to navigate and ensure healthy friendships are valued.

Dana will build on and further demonstrate the foundations of the Friendology program which OLC utilises and practises.

"The Language of Friendship" workshop is a rare opportunity for OLC families and I strongly encourage you to consider attending. This will be an interactive parent – child session.

Camp:

Just so that everyone is aware, camp has been booked for week 8 term 4. The dates are the 4^th to the 6^th December. The camp will once again be at Bridgetown. This year will be interesting as the camp has been taken over by different owners.

Farewell Assembly for Mr Wilkie:

Sadly Mr Wilkie has only two weeks left with us!  There will be a farewell assembly this Friday at 1.30pm in the hall focused on Mr Wilkie's amazing career. Please feel free to come along.

Our Learning:

Does gas have mass???

Well that was the question posed to the Year 5’s during our science lessons. This created some really interesting discussions and thoughts. Below are photos from when the students were experimenting whether gas has mass. It turns out that gas does actually have mass.

Term 2, Week 7

Interschool Winter Carnival

It is definitely going to be a winter carnival!

Year Five and Six classes will be participating in the South West Primary School Association Interschool Winter Carnival on Thursday, 13^th June. Please refer to the note for any specific details on what the children will need to bring with them.

Please note, that all children will need to arrive at school NO LATER than 08:15am to be ready for the bus.

World Refugee Day

Next week is world Refugee Week and Refugee Day is the 20th June. We are planning a rice day to raise awareness of the plight of Refugees. This year this will be an experience, rather than a fundraiser, although if families want to they might make a contribution to the Caritas boxes.

All students are welcome to participate in rice for lunch at no charge. They will be given a serve of plain boiled rice only. We are trying to help them understand what it means to go without. If parents think that their child will require additional sustenance on the day they are welcome to pack extra food.

Students will be asked to bring their own bowl and spoon that is clearly labelled with their name on it. This will take place on the Friday of week 8 (21st of June).

Term 2, Week 5

Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to week 5.

RECONCILIATION WEEK / NATIONAL SORRY DAY

National Reconciliation Week is held from 27 May to 3 June each year. It is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation journey. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A whole school mass will take place in the hall on Friday at 9:00 am. This will be run by our class in junction with the Year 6’s. It would be wonderful if you could join us.

June Long Weekend & Catholic Day - please be aware that you will have an extra long weekend as OLC staff will be taking their Catholic Day on the Tuesday. School will resume on Wednesday 5th June.

Term 2, Week 4

Welcome to week 3,

NAPLAN:

Last week the students completed two of the four NAPLAN assessments. I was impressed with their concentration and persistence through the writing and reading tests.

This Wednesday and Thursday we have the Language Conventions and Numeracy assessments. Please make sure that your child has their iPad and it is significantly charged.

Bright Paths PD

Just a reminder that on Friday 24th May, there will be a pupil free day as the teacher's will be involved in a Bright Paths PD.

Homework:

If your child is struggling with some of the concepts in their maths homework, please get them to come and see me during gathering time in the morning. We have 15 minutes every morning where I can go through some of the work 1 on 1.

Book fair:

The book fair will be held in the library this week on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd of May.

The students do get very excited at this time, could you please remind them that they must be in the class by 8:40 and their purchases must be put in their bags before coming to class.
